Madeira Carnival Parade

The Portuguese island of Madeira attracts travellers with its beautiful landscapes, exciting activities, and vibrant culture, which dances to the rhythm of its festivals. Known as the "Pearl of the Atlantic," Madeira is not just a destination for nature enthusiasts but also a fantastic place for those seeking to immerse themselves in the festive local traditions.

What's the best time to visit Madeira?

Madeira boasts a subtropical climate, which means it enjoys warm and agreeable weather all year long. However, due to its central mountain range, the weather can vary in different areas. This diversity is actually a significant advantage, as it means you can always find a spot on Madeira Island with pleasant weather for the day. I've personally experienced all the seasons on Madeira, and each one offered a unique and enjoyable experience. There's truly no wrong time to visit Madeira.

Flower Festival on Madeira

Madeira takes its festivals very seriously, so when visiting the island during a festive period, you can always expect an incredible show. Some of the most spectacular festivals on Madeira include Carnival, the Flower Festival, the Atlantic Festival, and New Year's Eve celebrations, for which Madeira holds the Guinness World Record for the Largest Pyrotechnic Performance in the world.

Flower Festival on Madeira

What's the best place to see the festivals on Madeira

Funchal, the capital and the largest city of Madeira, hosts the biggest festivals on the island. Most of the celebrations are organized along Avenida do Mar, Funchal's promenade. Watching the show doesn't require purchasing tickets, but you need to take into account a few long hours of standing time, as the parades can last several hours. It's advisable to arrive earlier, even up to two hours earlier, to secure a spot in the front line. Alternatively, it's also possible to purchase a seated spot in the stands, with tickets available during the festivals.

After the main parade concludes in Funchal, it travels to neighbouring towns on the following days, allowing more people to enjoy the festival. However, the biggest and most impressive show always remains in Funchal.

Flower Festival on Madeira

Flower Festival on Madeira (May)

In Madeira, the month of May is entirely dedicated to the beauty and fragrance of flowers. The Flower Festival celebrates the beginning of Spring and spans up to three weeks. During this festive time, you'll be able to enjoy various exhibitions, a market of regional products, and numerous larger and smaller performances. However, the highlight of the Flower Festival on Madeira is the Allegoric Flower Parade in Funchal, along Avenida do Mar. The parade has been a tradition since 1979, transforming downtown into a colourful garden. Throughout the parade, you'll witness thousands of dancers adorned in creative costumes, holding bouquets of flowers as they walk along the main promenade or ride on marvellous floats fully covered in flowers. The Flower Festival might just be one of the best times to visit Madeira.

Madeira Carnival Parade (February)

The Carnival marks the inaugural event in Madeira's festival calendar. While starting on the Wednesday before "Entrudo" (also known as Fat Tuesday), the festivities continue until the "Enterro do Osso," which takes place on the Saturday following Carnival day.

The highlight of the Carnival season in Madeira unfolds on Saturday evening, known as Carnival Weekend, when main parade makes its way to the streets of Funchal. Numerous Samba groups lead the parade along Avenida do Mar, adorned in magnificent and colourful dance costumes or dance on beautifully decorated floats adorned with feathers and jewels. This spectacle is a captivating fusion of light, colour, and music, drawing thousands of Madeira's visitors to join in the celebration.

Atlantic Festival (June)

With 20 years of existence, this official event opens the door to summer in Madeira. Therefore, the month of June transforms the Madeiran capital into an attractive and fun-filled venue, offering visitors a series of unforgettable concerts and shows, combined with incredible fireworks displays. Every Saturday night there are open air concerts creating an energetic atmosphere filled with music performed by local and international artists.

Christmas and New Year's Eve

Christmas and New Year's Eve (December)

In December, Madeira becomes immersed in the magic of Christmas. The streets throughout the island are lit up with colourful Christmas lights, and downtown Funchal hosts the Christmas Market, featuring decorated stalls offering tourists a wide range of regional products, handicrafts, and foods typical of the holiday season. The festivities culminate with the splendid fireworks display on New Year's Eve, a spectacle already marked in the Guinness Book of Records. The best vantage point to witness the show is undoubtedly from one of the viewpoints overlooking Funchal. Last year, alongside hundreds of locals, we celebrated the new year from Neves Viewpoint. I must say, the Funchal fireworks show truly lives up to its hype.

Other Festivals on Madeira worth Mentioning

As you may have already noticed, the people of Madeira love to celebrate, and their festive calendar is filled with events every month, ensuring that whenever you plan to visit Madeira, you can count on experiencing something interesting.

Annually, during the last week of August, Madeira celebrates the Wine Harvest, providing the perfect excuse to visit the island. Downtown Funchal is filled with decorations, and dozens of stalls are set up for visitors to sample different Madeira wines. Most of the producers participate in the event, drawing both locals and tourists alike.

A lesser-known fact about Madeira is that many locals are passionate about classic vintage cars, which they proudly display at various events. This enthusiasm led to the classic car parade earning its place in Madeira's festival calendar. On the last weekend of July, you can visit downtown Funchal to admire the Classics at Magnolia, with some of the well-preserved cars dating back over 100 years.

Another engaging festival that deserves a spot on the list is the Columbus Festival, which aims to recreate the atmosphere encountered by the navigator during his stay in Porto Santo. During this time, the streets come alive with theatrical performances, concerts, and a realistic 16th-century market. While the most impressive celebrations take place on Porto Santo Island, there are still smaller events to enjoy in Funchal and the surrounding towns of Madeira.

How to get around Madeira?

The best way to explore Madeira is undoubtedly by renting a car. We always use and recommend Discover Cars for our trips. They offer a wide selection of both international and local rental companies, with transparent pricing that includes all fees and taxes upfront.
